Constants vs Gumroad: Which Platform Keeps More of Your Digital Product Sales?
Gumroad and Constants both let you sell digital products from a single link, but the fee structure underneath is where the two platforms actually diverge.
What Gumroad Charges
Gumroad takes 10% plus $0.50 on every direct sale through your own profile or link, on top of standard card processing. Sell through Gumroad's Discover marketplace instead of your direct link, and the cut jumps to a flat 30%, which already bundles in payment processing. There's no paid plan that buys the fee down — 10% plus $0.50 is what every Gumroad seller pays on direct sales, whether you sold one ebook or ten thousand.
What Constants Charges
Constants keeps it simpler: a flat 6% fee on every one-time sale, on every plan, including the free Starter plan. There's no per-transaction add-on, no separate marketplace rate, and no plan gate to unlock a lower number. Card processing exists on every platform, Constants included, so 6% isn't the entire cost of taking a card — but it is the entire platform cut.
The Math on $500 in Sales
Say you sell 20 templates at $25 each in a month. On Gumroad's direct-sale rate, that's 10% ($50) plus $0.50 times 20 transactions ($10) — $60 off the top, leaving $440. On Constants, the flat 6% fee comes out to $30, leaving $470. The gap widens the more individual transactions you run, because Gumroad's per-transaction fee scales with how many sales you make, not just how much revenue they add up to — fifty $10 sales cost more in flat fees than ten $50 sales, even though the total revenue is identical.
Where Gumroad Still Has an Edge
To be fair both ways: Gumroad's Discover marketplace is a real distribution channel. It can put a product in front of buyers who weren't already following the seller, which Constants doesn't currently offer. Anyone leaning on cold discovery rather than an existing audience might find that 30% worth paying for reach they wouldn't otherwise get — though a bio link already sitting in a bio, a video description, or an email signature is doing similar work for anyone who already has somewhere to put it. Gumroad also has a longer track record specifically as a digital-download storefront, with license-key delivery and file-version updates built in.
What You Can Actually Upload
Gumroad accepts almost any file type, including ZIP archives that bundle multiple files into one download, and lets a paid product run up to 16GB per file. Constants caps digital-product uploads at 32MB and needs the file to match a fixed list of formats — PDF, Word, CSV, spreadsheet, PNG, JPEG, EPS, SVG, MP3, WAV, MP4, MOV, or AVI, with no ZIP support yet. For a single ebook, template, or preset pack that fits comfortably under 32MB, that's not a real constraint. For a multi-gigabyte course archive or a bundle of dozens of files, Gumroad's ceiling is the more forgiving one — though most single templates, presets, and ebooks never get close to 32MB in the first place.
Pick Constants If, Pick Gumroad If
Pick Constants for driving traffic from a bio link, an email list, or a following that already exists, and wanting to keep more of every sale on a free plan. Pick Gumroad when a meaningful share of revenue is expected to come from people discovering a product cold through its marketplace, and paying a bigger cut for that reach makes sense.
