I used to treat genre like a loyalty oath — if you loved alt-rock, you were supposed to roll your eyes at K-pop, pop-punk, whatever came through the wrong door. But the older I get, the more those walls feel imaginary; the same way Metallica drifted during Load because scenes change and listeners change with them, a lot of us are just following melody, texture, and feeling wherever they show up now.
