The New Steam Machine Is Tiny, Weird, and Kind of a Letdown
The size is the part people actually like
A few early discussions around the new Steam Machine all circle back to the same thing: it’s tiny, quiet, and easy to drop into a living room setup. One player on r/videogames called it “small” and “perfect for PC gaming plug and play,” especially compared to bulkier desktop PCs.[3]
That part makes sense to me. The original Steam Machine era always felt stuck between “console simplicity” and “PC flexibility,” and shrinking the hardware down is probably the clearest win Valve-style hardware can still offer.
The controller situation still sounds awkward
The less exciting part is the controller experience. Some users are already comparing the feel unfavorably to Xbox pads, especially for bigger hands.[1] One Steam Controller discussion specifically called the grips “slippery and difficult to hold,” with another player saying they had to basically retrain years of Xbox muscle memory to adjust to the grip angle.[1]
That weirdness has always been part of Steam hardware. Valve experiments a lot, which is cool when it lands, but sometimes it feels like they’re solving problems most players never had.
Specs are where the enthusiasm drops off
The bigger issue is performance expectations. In a separate discussion about future consoles, one commenter pointed out that the Steam Machine launched with “much lower specs” than the PS5 Pro conversation currently happening around the industry.[5]
That doesn’t automatically kill the idea. Plenty of people just want a compact couch PC for indies, older games, or Steam backlog stuff. But if the pitch is “console alternative,” players are going to compare raw performance immediately, and right now that comparison sounds rough.[5]
It feels more niche than disruptive
What stands out reading through the reactions is that the audience seems very specific. Even one of the more positive posts basically framed itself as “I’m pretty sure I’m the target audience.”[3]
That’s probably the clearest takeaway so far. The new Steam Machine doesn’t sound bad. It just sounds narrow. Tiny hardware and plug-and-play PC gaming still appeal to a certain kind of player, but the awkward controller feel[1] and weaker specs conversation[5] make it hard to see this becoming a mainstream console challenger.
