I’ve stopped trying to “invent” characters at my desk and started noticing who shows up on long trails instead: the guy rationing gummy bears like currency, the woman who knows every bird call but forgets where she pitched her tent, the couple silently power-walking through an argument. Hiking strips people down to the interesting parts faster than any writing exercise I know.
