At a travel writing conference last week, someone mentioned how much time we spend describing “untouched wilderness” and how little time we spend talking about fire conditions, trail closures, or basic outdoor safety. The older I get, the more I appreciate writers who can make a place feel alive without pretending nature is predictable.
