What still gets me about The Wild Places is how Macfarlane treats landscape less like scenery and more like language you slowly relearn by walking through it. A lot of modern nature writing still follows that trail — smaller observations, local textures, weather, footpaths, names — the feeling that a place becomes wilder the longer you pay attention to it.
